Lerin is a small village with medieval origins in the west of Navarre. What particularly draws attention to this village is that in 2021 it became the first village in Spain with the certification “Starlight”. The inhabitants of Lerín have worked for years to spread astronomy and reduce light pollution in the village. This is therefore the perfect destination for astrotourism in Navarre.
Starlight certification
The Starlight Destination certification, granted by the Starlight Foundation, is aimed at small villages with their own identity and a predominantly rustic character, who want to diversify their economy through the development of astrotourism, with the aim of promoting the economic and sustainable to prevent the growth of the territory and its depopulation. In addition, a Starlight destination must have a ideal place to view the starry sky.
What to see in Lerin
In addition to a beautiful starry sky, this village has several decorated and some regal houses. Among them stands out the parish house, a baroque building of the mid-18th century with Rococo shields on the Plaza de los Fueros. On Larramendi Street, there is another interesting building: a country house with an 18th century print.
The Fuerte Cazorla is the only historical building, apart from the church, that has been preserved in Lerín. Although its construction is relatively recent (1875), it is a good example of Navarra's historic military architecture. In addition, it is also the highest point of Lerín, from which the entire village can be admired.
